One of NYCR’s most popular weekly events is Lunar Laser Mondays using our Epilog mini-35 laser cutter. The only supported system is Windows with CorelDRAW and Epilog’s closed source driver, which doesn’t seem right for a hackerspace. Luckily, AS220 Labs has figured out how to talk to the Epilog using PJL. I’ve written a command line tool, epilog, that will translate the Postscript file into commands for the cutter.

You can create a magical box that could hack any heating appliance and tell it how to raise the temperature (up to .1 degrees accuracy).
All of the top restaurants in the world use sous vide to make make sure their proteins are perfect. It is a brilliant cooking strategy for so much more than that and it has been hailed as the next microwave.
Come and make your own sous vide machines with Arduino based technology. Experienced food hackers, Q and Abe, from LowerEastKitchen.com, QandAbe.com, and MeatJacuzzi.com, will be your teachers. In our class we will guide beginners from soldering to hacking their own appliance. Snacks will be served and eggs will be provided as your first sous vide meal.
Stay for an hour or the full class— it’s just $20! Additional costs are the kits if you should decide to make one and an appliance of your choice, we highly recommend The Professional Series 30 cup coffee urn (you can buy it from Kmart). Kits are available for $80.

Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft are collaborating on a series of new vocabularies that we can use in our websites to better mark up our pages. HTML5’s Microdata allows you to leverage these vocabularies.
Why should you care? Well, take it from the search engine providers themselves: “Search engines including Bing, Google and Yahoo! rely on this markup to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the right web pages.”

This workshop led by Eyebeam Fellow Kaho Abe is for artists, designers and hobbyists interested in starting to think about and explore alternative physical interfaces that can be used in games, toys or interactive art projects.
Thinking beyond the traditional screen, keyboard and mouse interface, as well as the traditional gaming controller, we will utilize tools including the Arduino development system, simple low-tech switches and sensors to create custom physical interfaces to enhance the user experience. And later on in the workshop, we will learn about combining Processing with the Arduino for a richer experience.
