etch-a-mouse

Great, simple, idea. An etch-a-sketch hooked up to an old mouse with a couple of stepper motors, wired through RS232 connectors, a couple of couplers (I love saying that), and a nothing-fancy Atmel Mega 32.

Imagine the possibilities this could hold? Actually being able to draw a circle on an etch-a-sketch! We should build this and marry it up with Bre’s code for printing images of of people and we can have an etch-a-sketch Portrait Maker 3000! Here’s the link to the schematic, the code and the instructions.

we got our solar panels!! finally!

Great interview at Ecolect.net with the founder of SMIT – a sustainable design startup that was started by Teresita Chochran from NYU’s ITP program. SMIT, located in Brooknam, is doing some really interesting work with solar power on homes and other sustainable energy projects. They are also featured at the MOMA design show we wrote about this weekend.

design elastic mind 1

There is a great show going on at the MOMA, NYC right now. It’s called Design and the Elastic Mind and features lots of amazing projects built with Processing, Flash, hardware, solar panels, etc. Here is a link to the show which will be in New York from February 24–May 12, 2008. Also a brief description of some of the projects at the show:

The exhibition will include objects, projects, and concepts offered by teams of designers, scientists, and engineers from all over the world, ranging from the nanoscale to the cosmological scale. The objects range from nanodevices to vehicles, from appliances to interfaces, and from pragmatic solutions for everyday use to provocative ideas meant to influence our future choices.

The last hope is a hacker convention in NYC and they just put out their call for participation. A good chunk of it seems to be about hackerspaces, so we’re going to have to show up and represent. It’s July 18th – 20th.

Do you have a lab, factory, warehouse, or other “hacker space”? Do you know there are other hackers in your area who want to build one? The Last HOPE is building the first “hackerspace village” to help bring together existing project spaces and inspire efforts to build them. Show hackers from around the world how you built your space, what you’re doing with it, or what you would do if you had one! Learn about, build, and help grow the global hackerspace movement. E-mail [email protected] with some details about your space or plans for building one!Link

I moved all my robots into the space this previous weekend, and it took much less time than I thought. This was great because it left me with 2 more days to code and work on my robot. You see, I’ve been participating in the RepRap open source project to create a self-copying 3D printer for quite a while. I finally found enough time to fix some bugs that were preventing me from printing.

If you’re interested, read more on the RepRap Builders blog entry.
