Intro to TouchDesigner

Tickets on EventBrite for this Sunday, July 16 · 3 – 6pm EDT class

TouchDesigner is a real time generative graphics application that can be used for anything from generating graphics using dynamic noise data in real-time to audio-responsive 3D geometry. We’ll go through multiple examples of how to start creating beautiful generative content in TouchDesigner. Interactive, immersive, generative media is the reason you’re investing in learning TouchDesigner, and this class helps you get started creating it right away!

In the class we will discuss the fundamentals of the TouchDesigner. If you have never used a node-based programming environment before, this class is for you. I walk you through the basics of TouchDesigner logic and workflows, explaining exactly what nodes and wires are and how they work. This includes a walk through of the basic settings and preferences you can leverage in TouchDesigner that set you up for success and make your life easier.

We will learn about all six of the operator families used by TouchDesigner, and how they integrate with the TouchDesigner workflow. I’ll walk you through an example project for each of them.

Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.

No masks required

Experience Kari Setsuko Love‘s Pneumatic Candy Robot No. 1 at the Interactive Show coming up June 10!

“Pneumatic Candy Robot No. 1 is a kinetic mixed-media sculpture combining candy with robotics. Candy serves as a medium to transform cold experiences with complicated technology into exciting accessible encounters. It invites the viewer to play by providing a surprising interaction, which aims to first make them laugh and then draw out their curiosity. In this way it can be an entry point to demystify potentially confusing technology while doubling as edible sculpture. Eating a candy robot engages all 5 senses, and then goes one step further by becoming part of the user. While each user can independently manipulate a spherical candy with the robot and eat it, by the end of the event the robot will be eaten in its entirety.

Experience Suraj Barthy’s Traces of Us at the Interactive Show coming up June 10!

“Traces of Us is a real-time interactive installation where a participant comes and places puzzle pieces to complete a puzzle in front of them. Each participant can place only one piece, and their face is captured with a camera and the part of their face that would be covered by the piece they place is projected on the placed piece. As participants place piece after piece, the puzzle slowly starts forming a face, with each puzzle piece being a part of a different participant’s face.

For example, if a participant places a piece where the right eye should be, their right eye would be projected onto the piece. If the next participant places a piece where the left eye should be, their left eye would be projected onto it. When another participant places a piece where the nose should be, their nose would be projected onto the piece.

The larger idea behind the project is that we are nothing without the traces of all the people we have met and never met in our life and that we are all connected across time and space.”

An Evil Mirror powered by an AI Cyber-Bully

“As generative AI technologies disseminate, many questions are raised regarding the ethics pertaining AI alignment, the consequence of releasing this technology on an unprepared general public, and social implications of massive data models and the implicit biases baked into the data set.

With the stage set for this technology to change the way we engage with our computers and each other, there are also many concerns pertaining to the concentration of this power in the hands of a few capitalist mega corps, and the guard rails they decide to place on the kind of content their technology generates.

A study in pipelining as many bleeding edge AI models as possible, ShadowSelfie™ forces the observer to subject themselves to verbal abuse at the hands of an inanimate object, taking an objective CV image analysis and applying a prompted GPT call to critique, insult, and interrogate the mirror’s observer, which is read back with Text To Speech technology. Although the observer doesn’t exist, does the blow still land?
