Making Friends and Building Community: Finding a Mission in Making

Tickets on EventBrite for this online/pay-what-you-wish talk on Wednesday, March 22 · 8pm EDT

Ian Cole is one of the founders of The Maker Effect Foundation (TMEF) in Orlando, Florida. TMEF’s mission is to “activate and amplify the efforts of makers as they learn, build, and work together” in Central Florida. TMEF produces Maker Faire Orlando, a 15k attendee, two-day celebration of making and invention now in its 11th year. TMEF also manages MakerFX Makerspace, a 6500 sq.ft. community-driven makerspace in South Orlando, the Robot Ruckus combat robot program, and more.

After years of chasing educational, personal, and professional goals, Ian felt unfulfilled and looked for a way to make a difference in his community. By connecting with makers in Central Florida and around the world, Ian was able to take his passion for making things with friends and grow the maker movement in Central Florida.

By sharing his story, Ian hopes to help others connect their skills and passions with a mission that leads to fulfillment.

Ian Cole is an avid learner who has spent his career working at the intersection of technology, marketing, and leadership in both for-profit and non-profit organizations. In his role as the Chief Innovation Officer for Give Kids The World (GKTW) in Central Florida, Ian is responsible for the creation and execution of initiatives designed to deliver unforgettable experiences for critically-ill children and their families. This includes capital, construction and technology projects around the 89-acre campus.

Ian received his Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering from Florida State University, and his Master of Business Administration from Crummer School of Business at Rollins College.

As part of his community service, Ian has also founded and led several non-profits related to STEM / STEAM education including The Maker Effect Foundation (Orlando, FL), where he currently serves on the board and as part of the production team for Maker Faire Orlando and the leadership of MakerFX Makerspace (Orlando, FL).

This event will be online via Zoom, and tickets will be Pay-What-You-Wish.

Intro to Projection Mapping with TouchDesigner

Tickets here for this March 18 5-8pm event

Projection mapping is a technique that is used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into display surfaces for video projection. The objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects, or theatrical stages. Using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. In this course, we will take you through the whole projection mapping pipeline, using TouchDesigner from content creation all the way through projector setup and calibration. This course teaches you the two main ways of performing projection mapping in TouchDesigner: 2D masking with KantanMapper and 3D mapping with CamSchnappr.

Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.

N95 Masks Required for this class.

One Year of Open Source Picking and Placing

Tickets available for this online/pay-what-you-wish talk. Wed, Feb 22, 2023, 8:00 PM EST with recording available 30 days for asynchronous viewing.

There’s this daunting gap between building ten of something and building a thousand of something. It’s too much to do by hand, but too little to justify outsourcing. Brave electronics hackers have spent tens of thousands purchasing commercial automatic pick and place machines in the hope of bridging this gap, however, these machines are far out of reach for most of us.

I’ve spent the last year among a community of folks building and expanding on a open source pick and place machine that can be made for less than $2,000. Like the early days of hobby 3D printing, there’s a lot of brilliant people trying interesting, sometimes wildly different, approaches to hard problems. This talk is about those people. I’ll take you through the start of our project and highlight some really interesting challenges and solutions our community has come up with. I’ll also talk about the future of our little machine and how you could get involved.

This event will be online via Zoom, and tickets will be Pay-What-You-Wish.

The suggested price for this talk is $15. Refunds up to 24 hours before the event. Event page with Zoom link will become available 1 hour before the event begins. Recording will be available to ticket holders for a minimum of 30 days after the event.

Learn to program with Arduino and interact with the physical world! In this class, we’ll cover an introduction to Arduino and learn how to manipulate outputs based on sensor inputs. No prior programming or electronics knowledge is required. This is the in-person version of this class– you may also be interested in the online version.

Topics covered

  • What is Arduino?
  • Software setup (IDE, how to program it, the Serial monitor)
  • Reading schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Basics of breadboarding
  • Controlling output (blinking/fading an LED)
  • Reading sensor input (with a pushbutton, potentiometer and light sensor)
  • Combining input and output

Materials

At this in-person class, you will receive a basic electronics starter kit, which contains a starter pack of electronics components and sensors, including a breadboard, wires, light sensor, temperature sensor, LEDs, switches, buzzer and more. You will also receive an Adafruit Metro (Arduino UNO equivalent).

Students should bring their own laptop and install some free software ahead of time:

Who should take this class?

Basic computer knowledge is assumed, and we’ll refresh a few concepts from high school physics and math. No previous experience with coding or circuits is required. Class size is extremely limited to allow physical distancing and provide the most opportunities for conversation and individual troubleshooting.

OK, awesome, I want to join!

Please be ready to start at 1pm!  We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you’re interested, you may want to sign up early.

Use Those Guts!: Building From Salvaged Components

Tickets for this Feb 8 6-9pm class are on EventBrite

Your victory is complete! You’ve wrested scores of motors, buttons, sensors and switches from the innards of scavenged e-waste. But how do we actually use all these gears, belts, pumps, speakers, and other mechanical and electrical doodads?

During this class we’ll demonstrate how to make use of all the random components we’ve acquired. We’ll learn how to identify and wire up different types of motors, sensors, and switches, how to reuse gears and timing belts, and how to make things that move and beep and glow! At the end of the class we’ll collaborate to make a simple trash robot that, if not exactly useful, should be at least endearing.

This class with be taught by Adam Mayer. Adam is a longtime NYCR member who has been disassembling and resurrecting old equipment for a decade and a half. He has a stack of inkjet printers in his home that is as tall as he is.

This is a follow up to his popular Grab the Guts: Salvaging Electronic Parts from Street Trash class, but works as a stand-alone.
