In this talk we’ll cover an introduction to using TAILS, an operating system that will let you keep a secret online identity in a USB drive. Aside from its worst-case-scenario-protection security design, TAILS routes all internet traffic through TOR, a global anonymity network, which allows anyone to use the internet without correlating what you do on the internet to your daytime identity. We’ll be setting up TAILS USB drives, encrypted/persistent storage, and running through the steps needed to set up a subpoena-ready “rogue” Twitter account as well as some of the general operational security practices around that.

Join us at NYC Resistor to build a personalized subway countdown clock. This class will introduce the basics of Arduino, electronics, and other important concepts you’ll need to join in on the Internet of Things (IoT). We’ll use a WiFI connected Arduino microcontroller to pull down real time subway data and display it to a LCD/LED character display. Never be late for a subway again**!

NYC Resistor will be one of 300+ neighborhood artists opening their doors for free to show their works and creative spaces. We will be presenting several projects made by some of our imaginative members. Come see a diverse range of projects, including lamps, textiles, wearables, general crafts and new media.
Gowanus Open Studios will also be a good opportunity to visit NYC Resistor to learn about our space and how to explore your own creativity! Members will be on hand to talk about the classes, activities and resources we offer regularly throughout the year.

We will only be open on Sunday, October 21st. NYC Resistor will be closed on Saturday, October 20th for a private class.

A class for 3D newcomers who want to learn the basics of creating 3D models and printing them. Your instructor will take you through key concepts of 3D printing, demo the technology on our printers, and lead the class through the design process of creating a model and preparing it to print. We’ll talk about creating functional objects, creative objects, available materials, print reliability, and compare various printer models and features.

Laser Cutting: Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter on Oct 14

Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.
In this three hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. We’ll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you’ll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)
After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32″ x 20″ so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.
Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

Intro to Soldering Workshop: Make an LED Tile on Oct 07

Soldering is one of the most important skills you’ll need for working with electronics. Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and desoldering techniques. We’ll be soldering up some Game of Life kits – LED tiles that generate nifty animations.
No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who’s curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.
This class will be taught by Resistor members Jared Klett.
