After drawing this schematic, I replaced C1 with a cap rated for 25v (also low ESR).
And, after reading a great post by Lady Ada on iPhone charging, I replaced R2 with a 22k ohm resistor, which tells the iPhone not to draw more than 500ma. See her page for more info:
