Today 9/26 Laser Night is cancelled due to a fire last Monday in our Laser. Rest assured we’ll be back in order by next week. We’re just awaiting the repair parts, which we expect to have in, in 3-4 days.

Lasersaur talk
At 19:3020:30 on this Monday’s extra special laser night, Addie and Stefan from Nortd Labs gave a presentation on the Lasersaur, their Kickstarter funded open source laser cutter. Safety goggles were not required, but fire extinguishers were.
Maker Faire After Party
There is going be a small Maker Faire after party at NYCResistor. If you have been to one of our craft nights, it will be along those lines. Come bring a project and hack on it. If you don’t have a project bring your self and get inspired. Either way come over and drink a beer.

Hey Kids, It’s Hexascroller!
A common complaint around NYC Resistor nowadays is that we never blog anything anymore. And it’s true! We’re so busy hacking on stuff that we hardly ever get the chance to document it. Bad hackers!
Anyway, here’s a project from May of this year. It’s Hexascroller, your friendly neighborhood integrated clock/wireless notification system/annoying beep generation solution! Hexascroller was hacked together from donated LED panels for this past spring’s Interactive Party. It’s got six 30×7 LED displays, an Arduino Mega, a charmingly obnoxious loudspeaker, a DS1307+ RTC, and an XBee all hanging precariously from a wooden frame assembled with sturdy hot glue construction techniques. It’s hanging from a ceiling beam in our front room like some demented Flying Saucer of Damocles.
At the Interactive Party we had Hexascroller displaying tweets, but nowadays it primarily functions as a clock. You can use an XBee to connect to it if you need to scroll a message or make a horrible noise to draw attention to the message you’ve just scrolled. You can see it in action below:

The Open Hardware Summit (OHS) is announcing its first Open Hardware scholarship this year! The purpose of the OHS scholarship is to support emerging artists/inventors and developers by providing funding for works that are released as Open Source Hardware. Granting these funds is an opportunity to draw attention to the Open Source Hardware movement, to give back to the DIY community, and to give you the chance to join a growing roster of gamechangers in Open Source Hardware history. If you have a project that is in the spirit of the OHS and supports the OHSW definition, we welcome your submissions.
PRIZE
Upwards of $2000 will be awarded. The scholarship is made available by the generous individuals and sponsors who have made the Open Hardware Summit possible.PUBLIC VOTE
The winner will be chosen by the public. All projects will be viewable online and votes will be collected during the week of the summit. People will be able to vote on their favorite project remotely or onsite. A check will be presented to the winning artist/group at the conclusion of OHS on September 15th at the New York Hall of ScienceINSTRUCTIONS
1. upload a 30 second (maximum) video clip to youtube that showcases the concept of your project. The title of the video MUST be the title of the work2. include a short paragraph in the description of the video. Your description must start with the following sentence, and go on to explain your project in less than 500 characters.

“The following project is a submission to the Open Hardware Scholarship awarded by the Open Hardware Summit 2011.
