Get started with silicone casting and mold making!
This workshop is for people who have always wanted to make a silicone cast or a simple soft robot, but have been too afraid to jump in without a guide. After a full project demo, you’ll go hands-on to make your own bending actuator. The vacuum equipment will also be available to use at NYC Resistor Craft Nights later.
Learn:
- How to measure, mix, and pour silicone
- Use a vacuum pot to remove air bubbles
- How using fabric can change the movement of a silicone inflated piece
This class is geared towards people with little to no experience working with silicone, curious about soft robotics, and want to learn basic silicone casting.
It does help to have typical hand dexterity, so please reach out if you think you might need accomodations.
Instructor:
Kari Love has been teaching a popular soft robotics for artists course at NYU for nearly 10 years, and was the co-author of Make: Soft Robotics – A DIY Introduction to Squishy, Stretchable, and Flexible Robots. She has made functional space suits, costumes/wearables, puppets, robots from candy, and countless other soft things.
