There are still a few spots left in this weekend’s PHP Classes, so if you’ve always wanted to learn PHP here’s your chance!

Beginning PHP runs from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday and covers basic PHP syntax, functions, etc. It’s perfect for people with little to no previous programing experience.

Object Oriented PHP is a class for folks who already know their way around PHP and want to learn object oriented programming to go with it. We’ll cover the basics of OOP, and some of PHP’s OO excentricities. It runs from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday.

From foulab.org: Jack Oats made a mini documentary called “repurpose” about the montreal based foulab. We got a shout out, which is very cool. It’s awesome to know that our talk at hope helped in some small way make this happen.

Widget and Hans stayed up til 2am hacking up some iPod sequencers at NYC Resistor. We are using pdPod on iPodLinux. You can hack your own iPods too, as part of the re-ware project, we are trying to make it easy: http://re-ware.org

Swap Night == Success!

swapfestOur first swap night was a success! There were lots of goodies being traded: mysterious old EPROMs, old iPods, a steam engine, a laser barcode scanner, resistors by the reel, even a Wii. Most folks left with a little more than they came in with… but at least it was different stuff!

If you didn’t make it you missed out an a lot of cool stuff, but don’t worry; We’ll likely have another one in the future!

Don’t forget, NYCR’s first Swap Night is tomorrow! 6:30 PM! So bring your odds n’ ends and see if you can’t find a new home for them!

If you haven’t already, RSVP so we know how many folks to expect! We’re not going to register individual stuff this time around, so just bring a bag ‘o useful things and prepare to make some friends. We’ll have nametags to make things a little easier. Plus who doesn’t love nametags?

I had a blast today at Diana’s fashion hacking event, and I made these nifty pants that sort-of function as a keyboard. I can play tetris at least! It was fun to make them, and if you’d like to make your own you can download the files from Thingiverse. It was nice to spend the day working on a goofy project with no real value with my friends. Oh, and now I have some super-sexy nerd magnet shorts. Awesome.

NYCR Swap Night!

electric stuff

Got a lot of perfectly good electronics waiting for a project? Need some obscure doohicky for a project you’re working on? Come to the NYCR Swap Night! Trade doodads for thingamabobs with your fellow hackers.

The fun is going down at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 20. Mark your calendars! After the swapstravaganza we’ll have a short show ‘n tell of what you got and what you’re gonna do with it.

The event is free but we do ask that you RSVP. A handy dandy junk registry is in the works for listing/requesting junk (so you don’t have to lug it all in and back), there’ll be another post when that’s ready. But for now just let us know if you’re coming! If it’s popular enough we’ll make it a regular event.

There is one specific rule: anything you bring has to go back out with someone. That someone can be you, or the lucky recipient of new junk, but you can’t dump it on us. Please only bring things that are actually useful – if it really is trash please dispose of it properly rather than foisting it on some unlucky soul.
