Menger sponge sponges!

Inspired by Kelly’s experiments with laser-cut sponges, I cut myself a few Menger sponges* the other week. They’re handy both for light housecleaning and cosmic conundrums!

Menger sponge!

Menger sponge!

I cut these from 4″x6″ sheets of compressed sponge from Dick Blick. I only took this batch to the third level; after that the holes start getting lost in the texture of the sponge itself. The dxf is here.

If you’d like one, I’ve put a few up for sale on Etsy.

*Yes, yes, these are actually Sierpinski carpet sponges. Nerd killjoy.

Oh, yes. Unfortunately I haven't found a good way to do this-- maybe I can try recompressing the sponge along another axis.
  • Fun.

Now we only need them in 3D :)
