The Knitting Machine

Yesterday, the awesome Kelly Farrell took some time to demo the knitting machine that Bre’s got at the NYCResistor space. The machine looks incredibly confusing when you first open it up, but Kelly makes it look easy. She even fixes a problem on the fly in this video.

Want to see the knitting machine in action? Maybe if we ask really nicely Kelly will break it out again for a demo at our public “Microcontroller Study Group” meeting next Wednesday!

In this video: Kelly Farrell, Eric Skiff (behind the camera / CC-BY music), Raphael Abrams (“this machine is my grandma!”), George Shammas, and Bre‘s knitting machine.

What the f*** is she doing to the poor knitting machine? I do machine knitting since years but never have seen such a pitifull wrestling match with a knitting machine. She better had someone to teach her how to do it right without wrecking the machine. Really!
  • The knitting machine is partially broken in this video, as a result of not being maintained properly (it was purchased from Ebay). That's why it takes so much effort to shuttle the carriage.

Since you seem very concerned about the welfare of the machine, you should be happy to know it's since been fixed.

So, that's /exactly/ the same as traditional casting of (if every stitch was on the same pin instead of the individual ones).

I too have an older Brother Kr-260 machine that I would like to learn to use. Please notify me if there will be additional video demonstrations.

I would like to watch and learn how to use the knitting machine. I have a brother I recently purchase that is an old model. I need help. Please let me know if you will be demonstrating anytime in the near future. Today I was near Bridge Street but couldn't remember the number of the building.

Please let me know what your schedule is like.
  • Awesome! My mom used to have a manual knitting machine. I used to move the needles back and forth and try to figure out how it worked. I'd love to have a punch-card model!

I wonder if you could hook one up to the internet and let people knit stuff through a website...
  • that's amazing! i wonder if Brother discontinued them because people found it tricky to use on the couch while watching sit-coms.
