Precisely because the full potential of the emerging field of soft systems, particularly soft actuators, is unrealized, there are countless opportunities for curious innovators to discover or develop their own soft systems. This talk covers concepts from soft robotics such as:
- What is soft robotics?
- What is it good for?
- What is material softness?
- How can material play inspire us to explore novel creations?
- How can we look at familiar and new materials with fresh eyes?
This talk is for anyone curious about soft robotics, and who is open to play. This lecture with have things to touch, and objects for play, but will not feature any hands-on fabrication.

Kari Love has been teaching a popular soft robotics for artists course at NYU for nearly 10 years, and was the co-author of Make: Soft Robotics – A DIY Introduction to Squishy, Stretchable, and Flexible Robots. She has made functional space suits, costumes/wearables, puppets, robots from candy, and countless other soft things.
