Laser cut intaglio printing

Did you know that you can cut letter press relief or intaglio plates on the NYCR laser cutter? The laser cut acrylic holds a decent edge and is far less expensive than copper plate. Here is a short guide to how to make engraved invitations using the intaglio process:

Now through Christmas: Laser Wednesdays!
This time of year our laser gets pretty busy, so we’ve opened up an additional laser night on Wednesdays. Tonight through December 21st, come by on Monday or Wednesday from 7:30-10:30 to fire the laser!
And another thing…
Because it’s such a popular time of year for lasing, we ask that you prepare your cut files so they can be broken up into smaller batches. That way instead of one person monopolizing the machine for hours, we can rotate through. So if you have an army of 100 Christmas ornaments to make, prepare your file so they can be cut in 2 sessions of 50 or 3 sessions of 33.3333.

Laser cutting from the command line

One of NYCR’s most popular weekly events is Lunar Laser Mondays using our Epilog mini-35 laser cutter. The only supported system is Windows with CorelDRAW and Epilog’s closed source driver, which doesn’t seem right for a hackerspace. Luckily, AS220 Labs has figured out how to talk to the Epilog using PJL. I’ve written a command line tool, epilog, that will translate the Postscript file into commands for the cutter.

Fire the laser for Japan, next Sunday April 17
This is another class in a series of classes to help Japan recover from the effects of the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11th. All proceeds from this class will be donated to the Japan Society’s earthquake relief fund
These classes fill up, reserve your spot now!
Harness the power of an Eplilog 35 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.
In this two hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. We’ll cover safety and basic design skills in Inkscape and you’ll learn how to do a burninate test to find out if something is laserable. After the two hours, you’ll have made a plaque for your door. (The extra two hours are for project completion time, but aren’t necessary for learning the tools.)
After learning the basics, each student will create their own design and lasercut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers acrylic and time on the laser cutter to cut and etch it.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independantly. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects.
This class is taught by NYC Resistor member Justin Day.

2 commentsScrabble Upgrade!
So there’s been some news regarding Scrabble making some rule changes as of late. I’m not sure I hold with all those rules, but I figured if we’re looking at making scrabble better I’d toss my hat into the ring.
My new scrabble tile set provides game players with a fully international character set through the miracle of character set encoding standards. By using my entirely hexadecimal tile set you can deploy your scrabble words in full unicode, or simple ascii. I think however, I might need a bigger board. The memory space on this bit of antiquity is a bit on the small side.

Dear Parker Brothers, this is a parody. Please do not threaten litigation. I mean you no harm. In fact I am quite sure my suggestion of homebrew tile sets can only increase interest in scrabble and scrabble related paraphernalia. I am your friend. Love me as I have loved you. Please.
No commentsQuick and Simple Laser Project

So I was cutting something yesterday for an as yet to be released project, and I noticed one of the other resistors had been playing with graffiti fonts in Corel. So I quickly whipped up a name plate for my office. Since I am relatively new, they hadn’t gotten around to ordering me a proper name plate yet. Now they don’t have to.

Lenny wrote to us about a project he’s completed and to thank us for helping him with some laser needs. I gotta say, I’m really impressed with what he’s built. It’s actually stunning. Check it out!
I don’t usually try to pimp our classes, but the laser class is absolutely one of the best things we’ve done. The amount of people stopping in and taking advantage of our laser to do insanely cool stuff is truly inspiring. I think I speak for everyone at resistor when I say, this is the reason we got the damned thing.
No commentsHow we hacked Shmoocon!

ShmooCon is an information security conference held in Washington DC, this past weekend. About 1300 people attended talks ranging from DIY UAV design to disk recovery methodology. It was an intensely fun time. HACDC the local DC hackerspace and close friends of NYCResistor hosted a pretty amazing party inside of a church down there. I remember grabbing rubens with Nick Farr and company at around 6 am the following morning, and thinking… goddamn I am glad I came. However, as of Friday around 1 pm I had still not left NYC. I was working and being a generally busy person. But I got a call from an unnamed person whom we will for the sake of time refer to as “Deep Throat”. Several hackerspace members had arrived at Shmoo to discover that this year’s badges were in fact made of acryllic.
